The Gospel Today
Wednesday of the First Week in Lent
Lk. 11: 29-32
While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them,
“This generation is an evil generation;
it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it,
except the sign of Jonah.
Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites,
so will the Son of Man be to this generation.
At the judgment
the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation
and she will condemn them,
because she came from the ends of the earth
to hear the wisdom of Solomon,
and there is something greater than Solomon here.
At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation
and condemn it,
because at the preaching of Jonah they repented,
and there is something greater than Jonah here.”
Reflection (Sem. Tommy Lira):
In the Gospel today, after the crowd witness the many miracles performed by Jesus, still they asked for more signs, but none was given them. Because they were looking only for the external manifestations of these miracles, they forgot to realize what is more important. It is what happens inside of us that matters most but many times we failed to understand. However, there is something greater here than just the mere signs.
Many times God continues to knock in our hearts, in the areas of our lives God continues to manifests His power, love, peace, mercy, forgiveness, and His abundant grace but we failed to understand His coming. Maybe because we focus more on the pains, on our sickness, on our feelings, on our needs but failed to understand that the only way He can come in is if we are willing to accept Him. If we allow Him to come inside we should let Him enter all the rooms in our lives even those rooms which are hidden. It might be hurts, painful memories, wounds of the past, and weaknesses. Those dark corners we keep locked make us unfree. Let the light of God shine and be honest and willing to face the truth rather than hiding behind excuses.
If there are things that hold us back, maybe a constant struggle and we cannot seem to get free, then ask God to show us what it is. And if God brings that matter in the open we should allow His light to shine on us and be brave enough to deal with it.
There is something greater here than just our issues. If we want to break free from that heaviness and start enjoying life, instead of looking for another miracle, let God shine in us and start being responsible in our actions. We may have a negative history, but do understand that we don’t have to have a negative future. There is something greater here and that is Jesus. Let us allow Him to work in our lives and we will see greater things we’ve never seen before. It is not important where are we coming from but what matters is where we are going and that is something greater, that is to be with God.
