Already Home

2 June 2019. The Ascension of the Lord

Reflection (Rev. Alfredo O. Dimaano, Jr.)

Have you been to a home where at the time you arrived to look for a particular person, there was no one to open the door for you? Or worse, have you been to a place where there was nobody to receive you?

To save on cost, I rented an apartment with some of my cousins in Manila. There was a time that I forgot my keys and no one was there yet. So I had to wait for two hours when finally, one of them who came from the grocery finally came.

Today, the whole Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. Jesus Christ, with all the angels and the holy ones are in heaven! Heaven is real and not an illusion. All what we have persevered and hoped for in this lifetime will not go to waste. Heaven is our destination. Heaven is our home. We know that Jesus is there, and knowing that He is already home, there is someone to welcome and receive us. Heaven’s door is open for those who strive to live with holiness and pursued in their faith life.

I may only have in my mind some images of heaven—the choirs singing, peace and joy all around, etc. I may not have an exact picture of it but what I believe is this: Jesus is there, already home, waiting for me. No need for keys, nor ringing of the doorbell. Amen.

The Gospel Today
Luke 24: 46-53

Jesus said to his disciples:
“Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer
and rise from the dead on the third day
and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins,
would be preached in his name
to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
You are witnesses of these things.
And behold I am sending the promise of my Father upon you;
but stay in the city
until you are clothed with power from on high.”

Then he led them out as far as Bethany,
raised his hands, and blessed them.
As he blessed them he parted from them
and was taken up to heaven.
They did him homage
and then returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
and they were continually in the temple praising God.
