Friday, 3rd Week of Advent
Today’s Gospel reading narrates this beautiful scene in the Scriptures. The angel Gabriel announced to Mary her divine conception and that she is full of grace because God chose her to be the mother of His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. But this beautiful encounter of Mary and the angel Gabriel will not happen had the Blessed Mother not given her “fiat” to the Lord. The Virgin Mary said, “May it be done to me according to your word”. This absolute statement of trust and belief to the will of God puts forward the plan of salvation and fulfills God’s desire that as man was an instrument in the entry of sin and death in the world, so also a man may be an instrument for salvation.
The Blessed Mother’s participation in the works of salvation was not only confined in her conception and giving birth to Jesus. She had become one with all the disciples of her Son. At the foot at the cross, Jesus gave her to His disciples as their mother and she as their mother.
We Filipinos have a deep devotion to the Blessed Mother. We venerate her in different titles. We seek her intercession, like when we ask our own mother for something we need. We find her a real mother to us. She is a mother who would not decline the request of her children if it is not for their good.
God hears the prayers and intercessions of our Blessed Mother because her faith and trust in the Lord remained just like when she was young maiden. As we prepare for the celebration of the birth of Jesus, God is inviting us to be like our Blessed Mother. We recognize our own blessedness and put our whole trust to the Lord.
THE GOSPEL TODAY
In the sixth month,
the angel Gabriel was sent from God
to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,
to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph,
of the house of David,
and the virgin’s name was Mary.
And coming to her, he said,
“Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.”
But she was greatly troubled at what was said
and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.
Then the angel said to her,
“Do not be afraid, Mary,
for you have found favor with God.
Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son,
and you shall name him Jesus.
He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High,
and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father,
and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever,
and of his Kingdom there will be no end.”
But Mary said to the angel,
“How can this be,
since I have no relations with a man?”
And the angel said to her in reply,
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
Therefore the child to be born
will be called holy, the Son of God.
And behold, Elizabeth, your relative,
has also conceived a son in her old age,
and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;
for nothing will be impossible for God.”
Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.
May it be done to me according to your word.”
Then the angel departed from her.
