The Gospel Today
Monday of the Thirty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time
When Jesus looked up he saw some wealthy people
putting their offerings into the treasury
and he noticed a poor widow putting in two small coins.
He said, “I tell you truly,
this poor widow put in more than all the rest;
for those others have all made offerings from their surplus wealth,
but she, from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood.”
Reflection (Sem. Rolly Teng):
Today’s Gospel teaches us to totally entrust and surrender ourselves and everything to God. The widow in the Gospel is truly amazing. She has so little and yet she is able to give everything to God. Her simple action shows a great love and trust to our heavenly Father. The little money she given could have been used for her food maybe her last meal. It may also be money she was saving for an emergency in the future. But what we see from her is extraordinary. She is ready to suffer out of her love to God. She is ready to suffer to demonstrate total dependence on God. She empties herself through the symbolism of the money to give space for God in her heart.
As I reflect on this Gospel, I ask myself, what are the things that fill my heart that I can let go for me to execute total dependence on God? Is it my comfort zone? Is it pride or the material things that I possess?
I remember when I had my Clinical Pastoral Education at Manila Doctor’s Hospital. I was very nervous to visit different patients. I was thinking that I might get sick like them. I was so afraid to visit and talk with them. Because of that nervousness and fear, I was not able to do well in my responsibility as a clinical pastor. I was not able to bring Christ to those patients.
Perhaps, there were things that filled my heart during those times. Because of personal biases and worries, I was not able to trust God. I did not depend on Him like the widow in today’s Gospel. I did not give space for God in my heart because of my problems. I believe that this is the challenge for us: to let go and entrust all our worries and problems to God. Because of our total dependence we will be sustained by Him alone.
We pray to God that He may grant us the courage to surrender everything to Him. Through our simple and little way, we may show our deepest love to Him.
