The Gospel Today
Monday of the Fourth Week of Advent
When the time arrived for Elizabeth to have her child
she gave birth to a son.
Her neighbors and relatives heard
that the Lord had shown his great mercy toward her,
and they rejoiced with her.
When they came on the eighth day to circumcise the child,
they were going to call him Zechariah after his father,
but his mother said in reply,
“No. He will be called John.”
But they answered her,
“There is no one among your relatives who has this name.”
So they made signs, asking his father what he wished him to be called.
He asked for a tablet and wrote, “John is his name,”
and all were amazed.
Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed,
and he spoke blessing God.
Then fear came upon all their neighbors,
and all these matters were discussed
throughout the hill country of Judea.
All who heard these things took them to heart, saying,
“What, then, will this child be?
For surely the hand of the Lord was with him.”
Reflection (Sem. Jonathan Cigaral):
“He asked for a tablet and wrote ‘John is his name,’ and all were amazed. Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed, and he spoke blessing God.” When Zechariah was able to speak, the first words that he spoke were those that praise God. It is in believing to the message of God that he was able to speak again and because of his overflowing joy, he praised God for His greatness.
The Gospel is an invitation for me to reflect on those moments of great joy that I have in my life. It is good to go back to those experiences and ask myself if I ever rejoiced and praised God for the greatness that he has done to me. It was in March 2005 when I was still working as a Quality Assurance Supervisor. It was that period when all of the superiors deliver their performance appraisals (P.A.) to their immediate subordinates. My boss called me over the phone and said that I needed to be in her office for her to deliver my P.A. I went to her office immediately. She handed me an envelope with my p.a. result. I was in awe to see that she gave me a very high appraisal. Though I knew that time that I really did my best I did not expect to receive such a high rating. What surprised me more was when she handed me a letter stating that I was being promoted as Customer Experience Senior Manager, which meant that I would be handling multiple departments. Written also in the letter was the increase in my salary which I would say was so significant. While I was reading everything in the documents that she gave me, she asked me to have my passport prepared for my U.S. Visa processing because I will be sent to the U.S. for a training seminar. It was a moment of overflowing joy for me and I could not say a thing but to praise and thank God for all His goodness to me.
The message of the Gospel for me is about believing and being thankful for the greatness of God. His love for us has no boundaries and that He will bless us with anything that He thinks is best for us.
