The Gospel Today

Wednesday of the Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time

Matthew 13:44-46

Jesus said to his disciples:
“The Kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field,
which a person finds and hides again,
and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
Again, the Kingdom of heaven is like a merchant
searching for fine pearls.
When he finds a pearl of great price,
he goes and sells all that he has and buys it.”

Reflection (Sem. Al Pestaño):

Every man has a deep longing of an experience of joy in his heart.  In the Gospel, we see how those who have found the treasure and the pearl of great price experienced joy.  It is the same when we found Jesus living in the recesses of our beings.  What a great joy to experience Jesus in our life!

Two years ago, I had my 30-Day Ignatian Retreat.  During the retreat one of the greatest realizations I had, and I could say the affirmation that has given to me, was God’s immense love for me.  As I looked back at my life since childhood, I realized that God has accompanied me all through my life.  He was with me from the time that I was conceived and even until now; whenever I am sad or feel like crying and when I am happy, whenever I am sick or weak and even when I am strong, He is there for me.  This realization is what I consider as my greatest treasure.  I found this treasure during the said retreat.  It is my “pearl of great price” and what I am holding on now in my priestly formation. It is what gives me courage and strength so as not to be dismayed or to be hopeless.  God loves me so much and no one can take this away from me.

We are invited in our Gospel reading to look back in our life and see how God works in every moment of our life.  We are invited to see how God has loved us in the past and how He continuously loves us.  When we find God working in our lives with his immense love for all of us, it is then that we can truly say that we have found the treasure or the pearl of great price that our heart is longing for and we will be willing and ready to give up everything in exchange for this great treasure.
