The Gospel Today
The Seventh Day int he Octave of Christmas
John 1: 1- 18
In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
He was in the beginning with God.
All things came to be through him,
and without him nothing came to be.
What came to be through him was life,
and this life was the light of the human race;
the light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness has not overcome it.
A man named John was sent from God.
He came for testimony, to testify to the light,
so that all might believe through him.
He was not the light,
but came to testify to the light.
The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.
He was in the world,
and the world came to be through him,
but the world did not know him.
He came to what was his own,
but his own people did not accept him.
But to those who did accept him
he gave power to become children of God,
to those who believe in his name,
who were born not by natural generation
nor by human choice nor by a man’s decision
but of God.
And the Word became flesh
and made his dwelling among us,
and we saw his glory,
the glory as of the Father’s only-begotten Son,
full of grace and truth.
John testified to him and cried out, saying,
“This was he of whom I said,
‘The one who is coming after me ranks ahead of me
because he existed before me.’”
From his fullness we have all received,
grace in place of grace,
because while the law was given through Moses,
grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
No one has ever seen God.
The only-begotten Son, God, who is at the Father’s side,
has revealed him.
Reflection (Sem. Wilbert Alivar):
The Gospel today is a timely for me especially as we end the year 2014 with a reminder from Saint John. Maybe, if without this Gospel today, I might get overwhelmed with my feelings, I was so happy and preoccupied with a lot of parties, meeting friends and relatives and I almost forgot the real meaning and the purpose why we celebrate the end of the year and welcome the new year.
From today’s gospel, I think it is good to reflect and dwell on the first few lines of the first Chapter of Saint John’s Gospel which says “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came to be through him and without him nothing came to be.” I was reading it repeatedly it’s because I wanted to internalized it and I wanted to remind myself that there is a beginning and the beginning was the Word. I said earlier that this Gospel is timely for me it’s because it helped me to appreciate and to be able to go back why we celebrate and why we welcome the new year. For me, the one who started all of this is God Himself and I was been reminded again through this Gospel that all things came to be through him and without him nothing came to be! So, if I do not think or reflect on things. Why all of this events or parties are happening now, it would be non-sense then.
As we welcome the year 2015, it also invite me to reflect what are the blessings, transformations and miracles that happened to me in the year 2014. Who provided me everything and why things happened in a way that was totally different from the things that I planned to happen for the year 2014, then it became clear to me that there is a very good year planner who planned and executed the plan that he wanted for me, it is God Himself who called me. As I review this year that about to end, I also realized that the troubles and mistakes I did. In the human point of view is really a tragedy or a disaster but now as I look back. It is becoming a blessings for me, and I can say God really working in me, that He loves me so much and would take care of me where ever I may be.
Now that I am a seminarian here in Holy Apostles Senior Seminary, again it’s another of God’s invitation for me to be more aware of God’s work, mercy and love. Though I am not worthy for God’s love and care but God continued to accept me as His own. I might not feel and be able to appreciate the works of a biological father but Our Father in heaven did nourish me and protected me. So I end this year with a greatest gratitude to the source of everything that everything that happened because of Him. I thank the Lord for everything happens especially this year 2014 and I ask God again to bless me this coming year 2015 that I will be always God’s blessing to others and to continue to be God’s servant.
