The Gospel Today
Thursday of the Third Week of Lent
Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute,
and when the demon had gone out,
the mute man spoke and the crowds were amazed.
Some of them said, “By the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons,
he drives out demons.”
Others, to test him, asked him for a sign from heaven.
But he knew their thoughts and said to them,
“Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste
and house will fall against house.
And if Satan is divided against himself,
how will his kingdom stand?
For you say that it is by Beelzebul that I drive out demons.
If I, then, drive out demons by Beelzebul,
by whom do your own people drive them out?
Therefore they will be your judges.
But if it is by the finger of God that I drive out demons,
then the Kingdom of God has come upon you.
When a strong man fully armed guards his palace,
his possessions are safe.
But when one stronger than he attacks and overcomes him,
he takes away the armor on which he relied
and distributes the spoils.
Whoever is not with me is against me,
and whoever does not gather with me scatters.”
Reflection (Sem. Kein Harvey P. Chito)
In his reflection in the book “Sabbath: Scripture Meditations for Daily Life,” Fr. Sandy V. Enhaynes mentioned these words: “Exorcists know that when they are to perform rites of deliverance, they need to be in the state of grace as the evil one may overpower them by pointing out their own sinfulness. So they would go to confession first.”
It is true that the forces of evil are powerful. Most of the time, we are unconscious when these bad things happen. We are already used to the dirty systems of our society. The different institutions in our economy are tricking the minds of the public. Many of us are already sick and tired of the different pollutions that are happening inside our mind. We are already trapped in the dark side of life and shadows are already manipulating us.
I learned in life that when you are tolerating a tiny form of corruption like stealing a little amount in your company’s budget or electing a politician who has a dirty track record, you are already adding dirt to the system of the society.
Next, whenever you are just passive and not correcting the wrong mindset and actions of your friends and loved ones, you are already contributing to their downfall.
And whenever you are not embracing courage in confessing your darkest secret sins in life, you are continuously throwing large garbage bags in your soul.
So what is my point here? You may be wondering now.
It is for you to detoxify your system. Life is so short to be bitter in everything.
It is for you to clean the dirt of your mind. You are meant to let go and move forward.
It is for you to heal your heart. I believe that your capacity to love is bigger than all of your faults combined together.
I am also encouraging you to take confession. This is one of our blessings as Catholics and that is why we have the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Believe me, it is like a piercing light healing your past and addictions. In that way also, you are reducing the hate in the world.
Today’s Gospel is personally inviting you to be on the side of Jesus. Behind these bad things is Jesus Christ who already gave up His life to save you. Yes, you are weak in certain areas of your life but it should not limit you to embrace the greatness that is meant for you. I know that you can do it.
