The Gospel Today
Tuesday of the Twenty-Third Week in Ordinary Time
Jesus departed to the mountain to pray,
and he spent the night in prayer to God.
When day came, he called his disciples to himself,
and from them he chose Twelve, whom he also named Apostles:
Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew,
James, John, Philip, Bartholomew,
Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus,
Simon who was called a Zealot,
and Judas the son of James,
and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
And he came down with them and stood on a stretch of level ground.
A great crowd of his disciples and a large number of the people
from all Judea and Jerusalem
and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon
came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases;
and even those who were tormented by unclean spirits were cured.
Everyone in the crowd sought to touch him
because power came forth from him and healed them all.
REFLECTION (Sem. Gerald M. Moscardon)
And He healed them all… Being healthy is one of the things we always pray for. I always pray for good physical health for me to go on with my ministry as a seminarian but there will come a time when illness will strike me and the content of my prayers would always include healing. Nobody wants to be sick mostly because of the pain and discomfort it entails and in my helplessness, I can only rely on the mercy of God.
I remember when my father was very ill due to kidney problems and at that time, he was already undergoing renal dialysis in order to cleanse his blood from toxins. It went on for two years and I witnessed how my father suffered with the pain of that process. He is a very prayerful man and he would spend good number of hours in his room praying. I believe that he was also asking for God’s healing mercy for him to be healed. There came a time when he and my mother decided to go to Lourdes, France and seek the intercession of our Lady for healing. I did not know the details of that trip until recently when my mother told me an incident in the hotel room. They went to Lourdes to ask for the grace of physical healing but my father received something else. Upon returning from the apparition site, my father started crying thanking our Mother and the Lord. He received spiritual healing and he knew already how to embrace his illness to whatever purpose it will serve, for the glory of God.
Everybody who approached Jesus from all over Judea and Jerusalem bearing diseases and tormented by spirits were healed. All of them. God’s loving and healing mercy is always freely given to us even until now. It’s just a matter of recognizing it.
