Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, archangels
The Gospel Today
John 1:47-51

Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him,
“Here is a true child of Israel.
There is no duplicity in him.”
Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?”
Jesus answered and said to him,
“Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.”
Nathanael answered him,
“Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.”
Jesus answered and said to him,
“Do you believe
because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree?
You will see greater things than this.”
And he said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you,
you will see heaven opened
and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

REFLECTION (Sem. Kein Harvey Chito)

Today is the Feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. These spiritual beings play essential roles in the Bible. Michael is the Protector and we often see his image battling with Satan. There is a statue of the encounter of Michael and Satan in our parish and it is located just below the belfry. When I was still in elementary, I always took a glance on it whenever I passed by. It reminds me that the good always wins.

Gabriel was present during the Annunciation. He brought the greatest and at the same time, most shocking news to Mary that she has to conceive Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. His obedience to God as the messenger, brought success to the Will of the Father. Gabriel’s surrender helped in the realization of the mystery of the Incarnation.

Lastly, Raphael is known as the healer in the Book of Tobit. God hears the prayers of Tobit and Sarah. That’s why He sends Raphael to aid them both. He was in a human form. This archangel ordered Tobiah to seize the large fish that attacked him and to remove its gall, heart, and liver. He used it for medicine. At Raphael’s urging, Tobiah marries Sarah. Then he revealed his true identity and returned to heaven.

These three archangels did their mission for the greater glory of God. They were entrusted by God because of their goodness and virtuousness. Just like them, we need commitment to obey God’s commandments so that we will always be guided by the promptings of the Holy Spirit.
