Friday of the Fourth Week of Easter
The Gospel Today
Jesus said to his disciples:
“Do not let your hearts be troubled.
You have faith in God; have faith also in me.
In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places.
If there were not,
would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?
And if I go and prepare a place for you,
I will come back again and take you to myself,
so that where I am you also may be.
Where I am going you know the way.”
Thomas said to him,
“Master, we do not know where you are going;
how can we know the way?”
Jesus said to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life.
No one comes to the Father except through me.”
REFLECTION (Sem. Miguel Josemaria C. Valeroso)
Masmasarap ang pagkain kapag libre (free food tastes more delicious). We say this to show our gratitude to the person who gave us a treat and also as matter of fact – free food really tastes more delicious!
In the Gospel today, the disciples of Jesus already want to follow Him wherever He would go. Our Lord, knowing the sufferings and persecutions that his disciples would undergo, promised to give them a treat, a consolation prize – eternal accommodations in heaven.
We too as disciples of our Lord have decided to follow Jesus wherever He leads us. We follow Him because we love Him, nothing more. But we know from experience that as we follow the Lord, we too experience joy, small consolations that God graciously gives to encourage us on our way. On the other hand, we also experience trials and difficulties in following Him and, after looking back at the experiences, we are thankful for these signposts that assure us that we are on the right path – the way of the Cross.
God provides everything for our benefit. He provides because He loves us, nothing more. The only reason we find the journey of following the Lord bearable is because we are aware that God loves us graciously and freely. Truly, we can eat whatever we want but free food tastes more delicious.
